Report on observation.UCD

Through assignment 1. I’ve learn to pay more attention around me and observe the different behaviours of different people. Some observations that i made can gives me idea on to improve some things and some solutions to solve a problem. Usually, we don’t really observe much in our life/ everyday life. Maybe we’re used to it, or we doesn’t care. So we don’t really notice what do people do/how people react.

I think that it’s really good to have a habit to observe. So that we can know what are the things that we can improve or do when interacting with people. Through this we can know the things that people looking for and what they want to see in a product and the purpose for it. So it’s really helpful for us.

John Little Sales at Toa Payoh.

What did I observe?

-There are many people there.

-Mostly are middle age people.

-There are some elderly who that are buying bedsheet.

-I saw more ladies then men at the John Little sales.

-Most of them are buying many things from there.

-Some parents are digging and finding clothes for their children.

-The clothes and stuff are all in a mess.

-There are some Hourly special promotion, when it starts, many people will rush over there to buy the items that are on offer.

-Usually many people likes to go to sales.

-A sales promoter is taking a paper to fan herself as it’s quite warm there.

-Usually there are lesser men at there.

-The most popular sections are the Handbags, Kids clothing, clothes and bedroom sections.

-The queue to the cashier are very long.

-People doesn’t put back the stuff back to the original place.

-The place look very messy.

-The space for people to walk are very narrow.

-The ladies are also digging out clothes that they want from the pile of clothes.

-Some people want to buy the clothes there, but they can’t try on it.

-Some people are frowning and feels irritated.

-Some people just finding ways to cut queue.

What did I hear?
-
“This is cheap!”

-“Hey there are discounts for the handbags over there!”

-“This is cute! Girl, do you want it?”

-“This is not bad! i can buy a few more.”

-“Hey, you go help me queue first.”

-“Ohno! There isn’t any fitting room here. How can i try it?”

-“I don’t know whether this size fits me not leh!”

-“Should i buy this or this one?”

-“Daddy, i want that toy! can you buy for me! Please…”

-“Wah! The queue is damn long!”

-“Tsk, It’s taking really long!”

-“Hey darling, the queue is very long. We come back later lah!”

-“Excuse me! can i try on this?”

-“Eh… How much is this ah?”

-“Hey, can you don’t cut queue!”

What did I learn?

-Many people likes to go to a sales because they can get good deals there.

-Usually they will really buy a lot of things from there.

-Some people don’t mind queuing for this.

-Many people wants to buy clothes there, but when some of them can’t try it then they do not want to buy it already.

-The place are really narrow and when there are a lot people squeezing, many of them will get irritated.

-Some inconsiderate and selfish people will try to cut queue as they do not want to wait so long for the queue.

What did it means?

-Usually people want to try on the clothes that they want to buy so that they can make sure it fits them. So when they couldn’t try it, they do not want to take the risk to buy it.

-It’s like typical Singaporeans who likes to go to a sales to get really good bargains and deals. So that they can save more money.

-People gets easily irritated when it’s really squeezy and some people will still likes to squeeze in.

-Some people do not have the proper manners to queue up and they only thinks for themselves.

Do I have any ideas to tackle the challenge?

-Maybe they can put a changing room for people to try on the clothes. So that there will be more buyers.

-They can put something that makes the queue more neater and put some bars there to prevent people from cutting queue.

-If the places is warm, they can put some fan there. So it won’t be so stuffy.

-Put a signboard to remind people to not to cut queue and be considerate for others.

-Maybe they can improve on the spacing, so that it won’t be too squeezy.

-Some walks really slow and blocked the other people who wants to walk faster.

-Some Just slowly take their time and chat with their friends.

-Mostly are in a group.

-A few of them walk alone.

-Some were smoking while walking to school.

-Some people hates the 2nd hand smoke and they give the irritated face.

-Many of them have their earpiece in their ears, they are either listening to their mp3/ipod or talking on the phone with earpiece.

-Some of them are sms-ing while walking.

-Some group walked in a line and blocked the other ppl behind.

-There are usually more people in the morning than afternoon.

-Some that walked in a group were chatting about their stuff that happened/about the movie they watched the last night/the exam coming up/ where to go for today.

What did I hear?

-“ohmy! It’s damn smelly!”

-“Hey, Walk faster!”

-“TSK!” - Irritated

-“Hey can u please go to aside.”

-“Hey the movie was great! you should watch it!”

-“Where should we go later on?”

-“Lets go koufu later!”

-“Do you want to have breakfast first?”

-“Ohshit! We’re late! Quick~”

-“OHNO!”

-“Excuse me!”

What did I learn?

-Some people who smokes are really inconsiderate.

-Some people doesn’t bother about others and just blocked other people ways.

-The people doesn’t give way to the people who is trying to rush to school.

-We should be considerate and walk at a side to give ways to others.

What did it means?

-Many people doesn’t like the smell of the smoke. So it’s really irritating when they still walk slowly infront of the others.

-There are any people who want to rush to school as they doesn’t want to be late for lesson. So we have to put ourselves in their shoe and do not block their way.

Do I have any ideas to tackle the challenge?

-Maybe they can make a walking are for the smokers who are walking to school to smoke outside at the open area. So that they won’t affect the people behind them who doesn’t like the smell of it.

-Separates the path into a few lanes and maybe they can keep the right side for those people who wants to walk faster or rushing to school.

At the Taxi stand at Causeway Point.

What did I observe?

-Usually there are a lot people at the taxi stand.

-There are lesser people during the weekdays afternoon.

-Usually people waited for very long for the cabs.

-The queue are very long.

-Some people are sitting onto the metal bar while waiting.

-Some are using their phone, either talking on the phone or sms-ing.

-Some just sit there quietly and stares into the blank.

-There are only a few cab that came into the taxi stand.

-A few of them are munching on their food while waiting.

-Most people who going to take a cab home are carrying a lot stuffs or some heavy items.

-Some gets really impatient and walked away or a public transport or go other place to take a cab.

- Some will On Call a cab when they don’t want to wait any longer.

-Some cabs that came in only goes to a certain places.

-Some are listening to their mp3/ ipod.

-A few of them are looking at their watch and looking around to see whether is there any cabs coming into the taxi stand.

-Some Taxi stand have this button for the people to press of they need a cab.

-There isn’t enough sitting area for the people who are waiting to sit down.

What did I hear?

- People that are talking on the phone.

-“Hi, i’m at the causeway point and i need a cab now.”

-“Ohmygod! i’m so late! There isn’t any cab at all!”

-“Hey, i’m at woodland now. I will be there in about half-an-hour time.I’m so sorry about it.”

-“Dad, can you come and fetch me now?”

-“TSK! Let’s go and take the MRT instead. It’s taking so long…”

- Sms-ing/Typing sound from the phone.

What did I learn?

- There are only a few cabs that came into the shopping mall.

-Many people have to wait very long for a cab.

-Many of them are impatients and they will frown.

-If someone doesn’t want to wait so long, they have to ON CALL a cab.

What did it means?

-There is a button for them, but it doesn’t really help much.

-Usually we have to wait very long for a cab to comes into the taxi stand.

-More and more people will choose to take public transport instead after waiting for very long.

Do I have any ideas to tackle the challenge?

- Make sure that the button is working and it will alert the Taxi drivers that the places need cabs.

-Maybe can put a signboard that show that the place need cabs. So when someone pressed the button, it will lights up the board or the board will show the cabs that are around the place that there are passengers at the taxi stand waiting for cabs.

-Have those buttons at every taxi stand so that they do not have to wait that long for a cab as the drivers will be alert when there are people who wants to take a cab.

Handphone Service Centre.

What did I observe?

-When people come into the service centre they will look for the queue number machine.

-After they took a number, some will look around the shop and some will find a place to sit down.

-Some were listening to their mp3 while sitting down patiently and wait for their turn.

-Some took a number then went out to shop first.

-Some took a number and then never return.

-Some were talking on the phone.

-Some were sms-ing all the way.

-At the nokia service centre, there is a counter asking the people on what they want to do first and get a number from them and it is not by ourselves.

-There is a TV for the people who are waiting to have some entertainment while waiting.

-Some people feels quite bored when they had waited for sometime already.

-Some keep looking at their watch and giving the impatient look.

What did I hear?

- The sound of typing on the keyboard.

-The beep sound of the board that is flashing the queue number.

-People talking on the phone.

-“Hi, How can i help you?”

-“My phone hang there when i trying to use this applications.”

-“This phone is damn laggy. So irritating!”

-“Okay, when your phone is ready they will let you know. Thanks!”

-The beep sound that keep flashing the same number when the person who took it didn’t turn up.

-“Tsk. So long…”

-“There are a lot people here. Can you wait for me at the foodcourt later.”

-“Hey darling, are you done?”

What did I learn?

- Some people take the number already then they disappear.

-Many of the people gets impatient after waiting for sometime.

-Many of them doesn’t want to waste time so they will go out for a walk then come back. Then they may missed their queue number.

-There isn’t any estimated waiting time for customers, so they have to just wait at the service centre.

What did it means?

- Many people doesn’t like wasting their time waiting, they prefer to do something more meaningful.

-Many of them had missed their turn as they doesn’t know how long will be their turn.

-Some of them doesn’t want to wait anymore, so they just walk out and go back.

Do I have any ideas to tackle the challenge?

- Maybe they can put a machine that allow the customers to leave their contact number down when getting the queue number. So when is about their turn, they will receive a Sms to inform them.

-On the tickets they can maybe show the estimate waiting time for them and give them a number for them to sms in  and check the waiting time with their handphones.

-When the person doesn’t want that number anymore, maybe they can go to the queue number machine to key in their number and says that they doesn’t want it anymore. So that they do not have to keep pressing the same number to wait for the person.

-Put more chairs for the customers to sit down.

-Put some interactive games or more entertainments for the customer while letting them to wait for their turn.

At the This Fashion Shop at Paya Lebar.

What did I observe?

- Many people are walking around.

-Most of the people chose their clothes already then when they do not want it, they will just anyhow hang at the different places.

-Some without trying the clothes, they just buy it.

-Some are just looking around, then walked out of the shop.

-Some kids are running around in the shop playing hide and seek/ catching.

-Mostly are girls and only a few guys are the guy section.

-Some will just flip throught the clothes.

-The clothes are very messy, doesn’t have a correct section for different type of clothes.

-Some will look are the mirror to compare the clothes on them. Some stand in front of the mirror for quite some time.

-A few of them speak in other language and i think they are from Philippines.

-Men usually choose clothes faster than the Women.

-There isn’t much variety for men clothes.

-Many pieces of clothes are all in different sections.

What did I hear?

- The music in the background( christmas songs)

-“Do you have a new piece of this? “

-“Eh.. How much is this ah?”

-“This is not bad, looks good on you.”

-“Is there any discount for this?”

-“Ohmygod! This is so expensive!”

-“hmm.. I prefer that one. This is not nice.”

-“Do you have any other colour for this design?”

-“Aiya, just anyhow put la!”

-Some talked in some other languages.

What did I learn?

- Many people wil just anyhow put the clothes at somewhere else when they do not want that piece.

-There are too little choices for the men to choose and buy.

-Usually people do not have the habit to put back the piece back to the place where they took it from.

-Some clothes doesn’t have the price tag and so the consumer have to take to the counter and ask them. Sometimes it will irritate the cashier as they are busy.

What did it means?

- It means that many of the people doesn’t bother to put the clothes properly back to the place where they took it from and this will cause more work for the workers there.

-Not enough choices for the men. So they usually doesn’t like to shop and gets bored after awhile.

-Some clothes that doesn’t have a price tag and the consumers wants to lnow the price, so they will take to the counter but sometimes there are a lot people and the workers are busy. So it is quite troulesome for them to find out the price.

Do I have any ideas to tackle the challenge?

- Put a scanner machine at some places for the consumers to scan the items they want and know the price themselves instead of asking the cashiers.

- Maybe they can put some sensor at the hanger of the clothes, each different section got different code. So when the items are placed at the wrong section, there is a small alarm that will ring but not too loudly. Just to alert the consumers that the clothes are misplaced.
